The reason their defense gave up the fewest yards was because of the special teams giving up such awful field positions. Lots of short fields

Is it possible that the reason they ranked first in offensive and defensive yardage was because their special teams unit was so bad? Opposing offenses had short fields and missed drives because of return TDs.

Feels like it's still the chargers even after having one of the best seasons ever I still think it's ok they didn't even make the playoffs, I feel philp rivers is one of the best qb ever top ten list , but I also feel the next qb for the chargers is gonna win a Superbowl the organization has to keep it amplitude of offensive output through change of teams they still don't identify themselves as a team like that success automatically , gates n LT is also top ten all time at they positions

I liked this video, however this is why Special teams is a really great thing for this sport, it's a third phase of the game that can add extra excitement, and I enjoy it immensely.

Not to get all chicken and egg here but:

You could argue that their inept special teams are the CAUSE of their highly favourable yardage differentials (especially the defensive yardage conceded statistics). It's neither your own defenses's credit nor the opposing offense's fault that they just don't need that many yards to get into the redzone or FG range, since they have such favourable field positions. So naturally your D is already at a head start since they have less yards to even concede than all the other defenses, so it's not really a level playing field. On top of that, if a kick/punt is returned for a TD then it just means there is a whole potential 100 yards less the defense can concede and that is one ENTIRE POSSESSION that the defense misses out on.

If the SD 2010 special teams were really that bad (which it sure seems they are) then you should really validate the data by normalising their defensive yards by volume like yards conceded per play, pressure RATE and sack RATE or something to really take that into account. I can't be bothered but those stats would really show that whether they were the #1 defense.

@SB Nation Hey SBN thanks for the reply :)

Fair enough on the 4.63 stat. That's still quite impressive I see and I would agree that it renders starting field position mostly irrelevant but not wholly irrelevant.
                                  - Firstly, it still doesn't take into account the potential yards that are up for grabs to be conceded by the defense. However far you are from the endzone, that is the maximum yards you can make per play so it really means regardless of how good the defense is, bigger plays are just more nullified due to a smaller field.
                                  - Secondly, not every yard is equal in terms of difficulty across the field (more so in the passing than the running game). The closer you get to the redzone, the tighter and more crowded everything gets. All other things being equal, making a 5 yard completion in the redzone is harder than making a 5 yard completion from your own 25.

And with regards to the offensive yards per play, yea I wasn't debating or doubting that aha.

Still pretty awesome find and analysis though.

On a per-snap basis (thus rendering starting field position irrelevant), their defense allowed just 4.63 yards per play -- no one but the Steelers and Jets was even under 5 ... also, their offense was #1 in yards per play (hence the bit at 14:05)

This may also have to do with the lack of points being scored by the offense much like the early 2000's Eagles who put up great yards but were not a great redzone offense.

Being a chargers fan makes me feel like we have been cursed. High flying offense of the 70s gets cursed when they have to play the bengals in the arc championship in the freezer bowl just our luck. In the one super bowl we made we played one of the best teams ever. We draft Ryan leaf.... Nate ceding chokes in the playoffs in 03 vs the jets. We had Brees and Rivers and had to get rid of one hall of fame quarterback. 06 we intercept Brady there times and still lose in the divisional round and the last one would have iced the game if our db would have just fallen down instead of trying to run it back and fumbling it. 07 we make it to the championship game against the undefeated Pats were Lt is hurt, Rivers is playing on a torn acl, and Gates is hurt. Of course it is the one game where Nate Kaeding actually made all his field goals to. Then we snuck into the playoffs at 8-8 and got to the divisional round to lose to that years super bowl champion steelers. 09 was our year and Kaeding again screws us against the jets in a playoff game. This video explains my next point. A few years of misery until the 2014 playoffs where we snuck in as a wild card and get to the divisional weekend to face of with the broncos where no real luck other than they just got beat by the better team. More years of misery till that piece of shit dean takes my beloved San Diego Chargers up the 5 freeway to LA where nobody cares about them, Luck doesn't change there as they rallied to 9-7 and lost out on a tiebreaker to the bills who they absolutely destroyed that same year. We also had our kicker experiment and yougwhae kool cost us the first few games especially the second one against Miami. The tiebreaker would not have mattered of he had just made one of those kicks. Next season we end up 12-4 look like a super bowl contender our star running back gets hurt, all of our linebackers are pretty much hurt, to where our defense has all dis at linebacker. The most lucky franchise in history the Patriots get the no.2 seed at 11- 5 cause fuck records we got cursed having the best two teams of the AFC being in the best division, And the Patriots get 6 to 5 free wins every year since they play in the worst division in football. We go into fox borough and they pound the ball knowing we had no linebackers. If we had the bye week who knows what could have happened if the Patriots had to go to LA for a playoff game not saying we would have won since our linebackers were out, but definitely had a way better shot than having to go to Foxborough. If you read this you are a trooper, and just know the chargers are a snakebitten franchise with a horrible owner.

This entire video is based on an incorrect assumption, that teams are good or ranked based on yards gained/allowed.

Your premise is that the league leading chargers are let down by their special teams, but in actuality it was the consistently poor special teams that led to outlying statistics. If you are giving up and getting multiple possessions a game, then of course you are going to have extra yards on offense and less on defense. Nobody in 2010 considered the Chargers to be the best team in the league. Sorry but this entire video is misleading.

I got rid of them because special teams touchdowns count against the defense. I didn't realize how good they actually were. I new the offense and defense was really. Didn't know they were #1 in both.

Wouldn't poor special teams performance disproportionately skew defensive stats? The chargers gave up so many yards on special teams that the defense had a shorter field to work with, significantly reducing the overall amount of yards they could give up in general. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the chargers defense was not as good as they were on paper. This team was a statistical anomaly because their special teams were so awful, not because their defense was great.

They’re doing it right now against the eagles. As a redskin fan, the redskins ruining huge leads has been a monumental part of my childhood. Thanks

Yeah, he’s good, but the last 5 seasons, he’s 1-9 against the Chiefs and shouldn’t have even won the 1 he won in my eyes. 8 of those games were against Alex Smith who just LOVED playing against them; hevwas 8-0 his last 8 games against them. But like you said, now Mahomes is here and now doesn’t hardly have any chance of winning the division. He’s f’d lol.
